Is there a timescale to support Rails 2.3 on Passenger?

I note that Passenger 2.1.1 has been released which includes support for Rails 2.3.

Is there a timescale for creating an apt-get version? It’s not critical but I have an application running Rails 2.3 locally and would be really interested to test it on a standard Brightbox? (I’m getting errors at the moment)

More than anything else, an approximate roadmap/timetable would be really helpful.

@joshhart – we have the beta version of Passenger in testing at the moment. I’ll let john comment on the timeline as he’s handling the packaging.

Thanks David,

I’m already running Rails 2.2.2 and Passenger on a Brightbox. I’d like to upgrade that to Rails 2.3 as soon after official release as possible. If John could give a rough estimate of when the new packages (that can run Rails 2.3) are likely to be available that would be fantastic.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

joshhart: I’m just waiting on confirmation from the Phusion guys of what I think is a bug. I’d expect we’ll have some packages for people to test early next week. As Passenger 2.1.1 is actually a beta release, we would be waiting until 2.1.2 until it’s recommended for production which, according to their blog, is a few weeks away.

Much appreciated, thanks.

I look forward to playing with any test packages as they become available – mostly so that I too can test everything in my apps before deploying to production sites.

Specifically, I have a need to fork the codebase of my app to spawn 3 new (but related) applications. I’m keen to try and pick a sane moment to do that and Rails 2.3 looks like a good point. It feels silly to fork a Rails 2.2 project right now when time isn’t critical – hence my questions.

This never really works but I try to plan my coding priorities based on likely release points so the information you have provided is incredibly useful to me.

Is it reasonable to assume that you will aim to roll new packages within a week or two of non-beta releases of Passenger going forward?

Hi Josh, our bug has now been fixed and the packages now work. I’ll make them available tomorrow for testing.

We’ll aim to have new packages for non-beta Passenger (2.1.2) within a few days of the final release – nothing major should change between now and then, just bug fixes.

fyi, the bug was this: http://code.google.com/p/phusion-passenger/issu…

John.

Cheers John, that’s fantastic news.

I’m interested in testing the new packages too, but I don’t see them in the apt repository. Are they available yet?

I’m actually having some annoying problems with some recent changes that went into Passenger that have made packaging difficult – I have packages that install, but manually need a symlink creating before they work. Other than this, they’re working fine – but I don’t want to put these out there.

I hope to have the problem sorted by the end of the week – sorry for the delay folks.

Actually, I got thinking about the problem this evening and solved it. I’ll start a new thread right now announcing the new version for testing.
